&body=The simple but dramatic redesign of this bank building was awarded Best Redevelopment Project of the Year by the City of San Leandro. The striking transformation was accomplished by filling in some existing windows while opening up other portions of the outer wall. A large bay was added to the south side, and a new portico on the east created an entry statement that gave the building solid street presence. The City required all downtown buildings to have a Mediterranean appearance. Red tile roofs achieve that, and also shade the large windows in the summer while allowing sunlight deep into a new two-story interior space during the winter months.&
