&body=We recently designed a family compound on a 10-acre property in the Sierra Foothills. The site is a sloping, north facing, wooded ridgeline that looks out over the American River Valley 2,000 feet below. At the high point of the property three buildings form a courtyard. The first courtyard building constructed was the "barn", a workshop and office over a large garage/utility area. A 1,200-square-foot, two-bedroom in-law cottage was the second piece built. The main house (2,500 square feet) is yet to be built, and it will close the courtyard. On a terrace below the main building cluster, sits the pool house with two guest rooms, a pool and patio.&
